15 years…
Same eye for the places nobody photographs on purpose.
I was always interested in the uniform nature, the emptiness and sadness of places out of the limelight or out of their season.
It is hard to distinguish if those places are in a western or eastern country, rich or poor neighbourhood, in that way betontulpen become truly democratic, and apparently universal.
More than…
It started long before it had a name
In 2011 it got a voice and a name:
the first public pictures on Facebook und the name
b e t o n t u l p e n
a German compound word meaning concrete tulips.

democratic
betontulpen. Places out of the limelight, functional surroundings and architecture, raw concrete - they all are potential betontulpen. Their uniformity across geographical distances makes them both unique and interchangeable.
SITUATIONal
betontulpen. They are not only places but also moments in the life of a place. Times when noone visits or life passes by them. Soon, life might come back but that moment of silence is preserved
EPHEMERAL
betontulpen. They document moments in time. Places before they are being torn down or upgraded. By that they become evidence of change and a memory of a soon forgotten past.
